Preventing Dogs From Attacking Babies
Most people are worried about how to deal with dogs when they are going to have a baby. These dog owners send out a lot of emails regarding their concerns of having a baby and keeping a dog at the same time. There is manner in which you can handle your dog and introduce him to your baby. One of the first things you have to do is to never allow the dog to come towards the baby when the baby is alone or unattended.
This should not be allowed for even a minute or less. Also make sure that your dog knows that the baby’s room is out of bounds for him. If your dog does enter the baby’s room, make sure it is disciplined. And if you have never used or owned a doggy crate, now is the perfect time to invest in one.
The first time that the baby is brought home from the hospital, make sure the dog is not allowed to sniff or lick the baby. Start training your dog immediately to keep away from the baby from day one. The trick is to teach your dog that the baby is your own, and that the dog should have no association with the baby. The dog should not be allowed to touch the baby or smell or sniff it. The dog needs to know that the baby is a member of the family and needs to be treated like high-ranking member.
So how will you train your dog to stay away from the baby? You can start by leaving items of the baby like its sheets, clothes and diapers lying around and making sure that the dog goes no where near these items or even plays with them or sniffs them. Once the dog starts respecting these boundaries, it will stay away from the baby. If your dog starts coming too close to sniff at these items, make sure you discipline the dog immediately.
When you start this training, you can use the 20-foot cotton line. It can be used as a leash in the house so that your dog can only wander in a particular area inside the house. You can also use a nice and effective leather dragline for the same purpose.
When you notice your dog heading towards the baby’s items or the baby, make sure you give your dog a loud “NO” command. If your dog does not listen to you, then you can use the more serious level 5 correction, and even if this doesn’t work then use a level 8 or 9 correction method. These correction methods are to make sure your dog understands that the baby is out of bounds at all times and that there are no exceptions.
